Spanish company Acciona has announced it will construct a $400 million wind farm in Victoria’s Western District, six years after it received planning approval.

The new 63-turbine wind farm is expected to generate 189-megawatts of clean energy, enough to power 88,000 homes, with construction due to start in March.

The Mount Gellibrand plant required final government approval before construction could commence, and will not be subject to the new veto powers introduced by the State Government which gives householders the right to refuse having a turbine constructed within a two kilometre radius.

“The Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm will bring significant economic activity and benefits to the Colac region as well as providing a new source of clean, renewable energy,” Acciona’s Director Generation, Brett Wickham, said.

Although the construction timeline for the plant’s completion has not yet been determined, Acciona anticipates it will generate 200 jobs for the duration of the construction period.
