First geodynamic plant comes online
The country’s first Enhanced Geothermal Systems generated power has begun entering the grid after Geodynamics Limited 1MWe Habanero Pilot Plant came online earlier this week.
The plant has now commenced a demonstration trial period which is scheduled to run for around 100 days, with completion set for August this year.
“The generation of power at our 1MWe Pilot Plant is a major milestone for Geodynamics, geothermal power in Australia and EGS technology globally. The commencement of the demonstration trial is the culmination of many years of hard work and the application of rigorous engineering and field operations,” Geodynamics’ Managing director Geoff Ward said.
“The Habanero EGS Project is a globally significant demonstration of EGS geothermal capability.”
The plant uses geothermal energy production, which sources energy from hot fractured rocks and is generated by special heath producing granites located some 3 kilometres below the earth’s surface.
The plant will offer zero carbon, base-load energy generation, meaning it can produce uninterrupted power 24 hours a day.
