Green gap probed
The NSW Government has been called to explain an apparent contradiction in its pollution plans.
Labor, the Greens and independent politicians want the Perrottet government to explain how its emissions projections align with its 2050 net-zero goal.
According to the government's emissions dashboard, pollution from coal and gas will extend out to the middle of the century, while the land sector will grow as a sink for carbon emissions.
While the LNP government has set a 70 per cent reduction goal in emissions by 2035, the state does not yet have legislated 2035 or 2050 targets to drive change.
The dashboard indicates that current policies will result in a significant reduction in emissions from the electricity sector but not from other sectors such as coal mines and gas fields.
Labor has pledged to legislate targets and establish an independent, scientifically-based net-zero commission if elected. The Greens have also called for a stop to new or expanded coal and gas projects to reach net-zero.
