Green groups get together on wind farm debate
Australian environmental groups are campaigning to end anti-wind farm rhetoric, saying it could damage the industry and our environmental future.
Green groups have got the support of Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas. They’ve joined forces to counter a campaign going on in Canberra, which claims wind farms can lead to various health and environmental problems. Greenpeace is among those in favour of wind farms in Australia, joining Environment Victoria and GetUp! in the campaign against misinformation.
Morten Albaek, Vestas’ senior vice-president says, "the rising anti-wind movement could, if unchecked, lead to additional legislative and regulatory restrictions that will constrain the market and choke off the country's exceptional wind potential."
Vestas and the environmental groups admit there are questions to be answered about industrial wind farms and turbines, but accuse the anti-wind campaigners of obscurring the truth with baseless argumentsand using “astroturfing” tactics, creating a fake grassroots movement. Critics say it’s a thinly-veiled attempt by energy companies to slow progress in renewable methods.
