Green upgrades open
Councils can soon access a big new energy fund.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced a new $100 million federal fund, the Community Energy Upgrades Fund, which will allow local councils in Australia to apply for funding to enhance the energy efficiency of swimming pools, sporting grounds, and courts.
In a speech to the nation's councils, Albanese expressed his satisfaction with the number of local governments that have committed to achieving net-zero emissions.
The program aims to be operational before the end of the year and will be implemented in partnership with the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA).
By upgrading pool heating systems, sports lighting, and implementing new storage technology in community centres and libraries, councils can reduce their energy bills significantly, ultimately benefiting ratepayers.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen highlighted the positive impact this initiative will have on reducing rate increases resulting from high energy bills.
Albanese also urged mayors to address housing affordability issues and facilitate population growth in regional areas experiencing skilled labour shortages.
ALGA President Linda Scott has commended the establishment of the fund, saying it will be crucial in achieving the government's net-zero emissions target by 2050, creating jobs, and increasing climate resilience at the local level.
