A new partnership between the University of Newcastle and Hunter TAFE has been announced to further the development of joint capabilities in research, training and related services.

The creation of an Innovation Incubator is a key initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organisations.

The Innovation Incubator will result in researchers at the University’s Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and training specialists at Hunter TAFE working together to tackle society’s emerging energy and resources productivity and sustainability.

University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mike Calford said it was an exciting opportunity for the Hunter’s energy and resources sector.

“Research underway at NIER aimed at reducing energy and water consumption in key industries, lowering carbon emissions and developing alternative energy sources has a direct impact on industry now and into the future,” Professor Calford said.

“Working in partnership with Hunter TAFE will provide a valuable cross-pollination of ideas, resources and opportunities that will better inform future partnerships and industry collaborations.

“The strength and quality of research underway at NIER coupled with Hunter TAFE’s innovative training programs will ensure the Hunter continues to go from strength to strength as Australia’s energy research and training hub.”

Hunter TAFE Institute Director Phil Cox said Hunter TAFE was committed to building and strengthening strategic partnerships with the University in the provision of training for innovative renewable energy systems.

“Hunter TAFE is proudly partnering with NIER in the Solar Flagships Research Program, lead by CSIRO and also supported by the University of NSW - a $66.5 million research project for the proposed Moree Solar Farm,” Mr Cox said.

“The MOU will inform the development of training programs to meet new and emerging skills needed in the energy field and ensure Hunter TAFE continues to provide high quality graduates who significantly contribute to Australian business and industry.”
