Projects push QLD to solar edge
Work is ramping up in Western Queensland, which is fast becoming a major solar energy hub.
Queensland’s largest solar farm near Barcaldine is coming online soon, and construction has just started at the site of another major project in Longreach.
It is one of six solar projects partially funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) across Queensland, with construction to begin on another six next year.
The 25 megawatt (MW) Barcaldine solar farm is now complete, and now needs its 79,000 panels connected to the state's electricity grid to provide capacity for over 8,000 homes by mid-December.
Just down the road, work is about to start on the 15MW Longreach Solar Farm built by Canadian Solar with funds from the last round of ARENA funding.
Canadian Solar general manager Daniel Rouss says it is a perfect area for solar power.
“Certainly one of the best in the world,” he told the ABC.
“Basically it's good infrastructure, radiance, the amount of sunlight, support from the council, access to local community contractors. It has everything we need.”
