Tasmania tables energy reform legislation
The Tasmanian Government has tabled legislation before State Parliament that it says paves the way for major reforms of the State’s electricity industry.
State Energy Minister Bryan Green said the legislation would facilitate the restructuring of the State’s energy sector to help keep downward pressure on power prices.
"The Government wants competition in the electricity market which will give Tasmanian customers retail choice,” Mr Green said.
"This legislation will ensure the reforms are implemented and competition is introduced in Tasmania as soon as possible.”
Mr Green said the legislation would enable the sale of Aurora Energy's customer base, providing certainty for new retailers to enter the market.
"The Government is confident the package of reforms will achieve the best outcomes for Tasmanians while maintaining our core generating and network assets in public hands,” Mr Green said.
Mr Green said the legislation will ensure the entitlements of employees are protected in any transfer of assets, rights and liabilities between the electricity businesses.
Mr Green said an Electricity Reform Coordinator would be appointed to guide the implementation of the restructure and the Shareholder Ministers would be given powers to make decisions on electricity reform outcomes that are in the best interests of the State.
