Viva Energy has entered into a partnership to save a remote island fuel facility.

Viva Energy Australia has announced a strategic collaboration with Tiwi Port and Marine, along with the Department of Defence, to ensure the continued operation of the Melville Island Fuel Facility, a 30-million-litre storage hub located 80 kilometres north of Darwin.

The facility, critical for supporting regional industries and strengthening Defence fuel resilience, faced closure following the administration of its previous operator.

Tiwi Port and Marine, an Indigenous-led organisation, will assume control of port operations under the partnership. Viva Energy will hold a long-term licence to operate the fuel facility, providing stability to the business while securing fuel storage agreements with Defence.

Viva Energy says the partnership aligns with the company’s reconciliation goals.

Tiwi Port and Marine will also benefit from revenue-sharing arrangements as storage volumes grow.

“I’m very proud of this new partnership,” Chair and Traditional Owner Gibson Farmer Illortaminni said.

“The Tiwi people are shaping the island now and into the future, creating jobs and opportunities for our kids and future generations.”

The deal is part of Viva Energy’s Third Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, which aims to provide economic opportunities and skill development for First Nations communities.
